International Specification S1000D

About S1000D

The first version of the S1000D specification was developed by the Aerospace and Defense Industries Association of Europe (ASD). Later, the Aerospace Industries Association of America (AIA) and the Air Transport Association (ATA) joined in to make it more useful.

History

The first version of S1000D was published in 1989 to solve data sharing and collaboration problems in aviation projects jointly run by ASD. Meanwhile, based on the ATA 100 standard, it is aimed at making technical information modular and enabling data sharing between institutions.

The use of the S1000D, which has been adopted by the European and American defense industries, has become widespread. S1000D, which has been published in 12 different versions to date, has been compatible with the XML language since 2005, in line with developing information sharing technologies.

S1000D is managed by the S1000D Steering Committee, which consists of representatives from 13 participating and two observer countries, as well as six international organizations. Change proposals are being evaluated for version 6.0 of the S1000D, which is constantly updated.

General Data Structure

S1000D-compliant technical document information is created in XML files called data modules.

A data module can be defined as "the smallest independent unit of information in a technical publication".

A data module consists of two parts:

'Identity and verification section' containing all management information,
'Content' section with technical narration.

S1000D XML schemas make it possible to share data because they provide a standard structure for creating technical data.
